The
original parish of Forgandenny formed part of the Pictish thanedom of
Forteviot and spread across the royal route south from Perth crossing the Earn
at the first fording place. The independent parish was created during the
establishment of the diocese of Dunkeld while Forteviot remained attached to
St. Andrews.
For
many years the parish was under control of the Abbey of Inchaffray and became
central to the development of collegiate foundations throughout the Middle
Ages. Such was the parish's position between Strathearn and Fife that
development was strongly influenced by changing religious views which
prevailed in the regions.
Forgandenny
lands were held by royal chamberlains as the Barony of Forgandenny from the
eleventh century. By the sixteenth century, the Barony had been divided into
three parts which formed the basic pattern of the later estates.
