Forgandenny
- A Place in History
There have been many families in the parish. The main
influences in the past have been the noble families of Berkeley, Lyon,
Stewart, Haliburton, Oliphant, Spens and Ruthven whose span covered hundreds
of years. The book gives details of the foundation and tenure of these
families and their related cadets, as well as their influences nationally and
internationally. The nineteenth century families of Wood, Bell and Calder did
much to guide the parish into the modern times. The book does not ignore less
noble families and gives a lot of information on countless others whose
influence sustained and modified the parish in time with the age.
Forgandenny Cricket Club, captained
by John Stephenson, made their first public foray into the Perth League on
Saturday May 27th 1899 with a home match against the Caledonian Railway XI
from Perth. The match was played in the village near the front gates of
Freeland on the old Minister’s Park now renamed the Cricket Park. Three weeks
later the team, with the skills of the Freeland butler Henry Benstead and the
footman William Hailes, played a Sunday game away at Bridge of Earn, against a
team captained by Alex Buchan Stevens of Kilgraston Mains.
